This morning, virtually every Republican U.S. Senator stood up and fought to permanently repeal the Death Tax. They lost. But they didn’t lose by much, and they didn’t lose without a fight.
We’d like them to win, of course. But if they can’t, today was exactly the way we want them to act. And they did.
The only Republicans to vote AGAINST repealing the Death Tax were Rhode Island’s Lincoln Chafee (so liberal he actually voted against George W. Bush’s re-election in 2004) and Ohio’s George Voinovich. With Chafee in a tough primary against a conservative, pro-growth challenger right now, we mean to punish him immediately.
So the good news is, our guys fought, and fought hard. We have just 55 Republicans: two known liberals defected, but our guys also persuaded four Democrats to cross the aisle and vote with us. A total of 57 Senators voted to kill the Death Tax, where 60 was required to block a Clinton-Kerry-Kennedy filibuster. And that’s no small thing.
It also shows who the real enemy is. It’s not Republicans, who got their act together and did what they were elected to do: it’s the 41 Democrats who honestly believe that family farmers and corner grocers should have to sell they businesses and fire their workers so they can pay 55% of everything they own to the government when they die. These are old-school socialists: they believe in punishing honest hard work and empowering unions and bureaucrats over you. And they, along with Chafee and Voinovich, have to go.
Today, we saw clearly what five more conservative Senators would mean for America. We saw what a Democrat-led Senate would mean for America too.
At TheVanguard.Org, we believe in remembering our friends and punishing our enemies. Target Number One: Lincoln Chafee. In days to come, we’ll give you ways to help defeat him in his Rhode Island U.S. Senate primary, where he faces pro-growth conservative Steve Laffey. And we’ll also help you support the conservatives who stood up, as well as defeat the left-wing MoveOn.org onslaught that seeks to turn the Senate into a “people’s republic” this fall.
But above all, I want to thank — and encourage — each and every one of you. Without your hard work, thousands of signed petitions, phone calls, faxes and everything else you did, even 57 votes would have been impossible. We put these guys on the record: we know where they stand. And now we can use that to achieve a far greater conservative victory, this fall and beyond.
The internet is changing politics. You are what makes it go. And next time, we will win.

P.S. The Death Tax is far from the only fight going on right now. Stay in the fight: 2006 can still be a big year for conservatives, enacting reforms, confirming judges, beating Democrats and (our personal favorite) beating liberal Republicans. There’s a lot to do, and you can do it here, now:

P.P.S. As I mentioned before, Lincoln Chafee is far from a first-offender. Check out this article I wrote some time back about his plot to hand the entire Senate to Democrat control when he thought he had a chance to do it. Chafee is the ultimate RINO (Republican in Name Only), and represents everything that’s wrong with the Republican Party. It’s time to send him home.
